Hip Replacement Surgery

What is hip replacement surgery?

An orthopedic surgeon will remove the damaged components of the hip joint and replace them with new, artificial components during hip replacement surgery, also known as hip arthroplasty. These synthetic components replicate how the human hip joint works. It’s typically carried out on individuals who have failed to respond to previous therapies, such as using a cane or walker, losing weight, taking medications, and physical therapy.

What are the common causes of hip replacement?

  1. Osteoarthritis.
  2. Inflammation in the joints
  3. syndrome of femoroacetabular impingement.
  4. Injuries from falls, such as hip fractures or dislocations.
  5. A wound that didn’t heal properly.
  6. Hip problems in children

Symptoms of hip replacement

The following signs and symptoms could be connected to ailments that hip replacement treats. That include

  1. Pain with activity and at rest
  2. The ache that worsens when you bear weight on the affected leg
  3. Hip tightness or stiffness

  5. Difficulty walking
Having trouble putting on socks or shoes

Surgical procedure for hip replacement

  • Once in the surgery room, an intravenous (IV) line will be placed in your hand or arm. An implanted urinary catheter might also be used.
  • You will undergo general or below-the-waist anesthesia on the advice of your anesthesiologist and orthopedic surgeon.
  • The surgeon will position you appropriately to access the hip joint and create an incision. Whether the surgeon employs a front, rear, or side approach will determine where the incision is made.
  • The surgeon will make an incision in the top of the femur and remove the femoral head, which is the ball portion of the joint. The ball prosthesis stem will be inserted, either with or without cement. The femur implant’s top will then be fitted with the ceramic replacement head.
  • The replacement cup will then be attached after the surgeon removes the worn cartilage from the acetabulum (the joint’s socket).
  • To ensure your limb is functioning correctly, your surgeon will bend and move it.
  • Stitches that dissolve will be used to close tissue layers. Surgical glue is used to seal the skin’s top layer. After your procedure, no stitches will need to be taken out.
  • After spending a few hours in the recovery room, you will be transported to a hospital room. Depending on your condition, the surgeon will let you know when it is safe to return home on the same day.
